Pfumvudza (pronounced foom-vood-za), is a sustainable farming technique taught by Foundations for Farming in Zimbabwe that requires nothing more than a hoe and hard work and implements principles of conservation agriculture. This zero-tillage method makes use of the four tenets of conservation agriculture:
1) Minimal soil disturbance,
2) Maximum soil coverage (i.e. mulching),
3) Crop rotation,
4) High management.

A pfumvudza plot uses just 1/8 of an acre of land, and properly planted and managed, can provide enough grain to feed a family of 6 for one year. The plot has 52 rows – one for each week of the year! Total cost of inputs for the planting is just $50! If a family chose to grow two of these plots, the second plot could be sold for a profit of up to $400! Small field, more yield.

Through this approach, farmers learn the minimal requirements to become self-sufficient and generate surplus from their land. With these best practices, farmers escape poverty, have healthy diets, improve the environment, and generate enough income to build a better future for themselves and their families.
