Light Up Communities
An average American will use 50 kWh in less than a day and a half, but this amount is supposed to last a person in Nigeria a whole year. More than 50% of the population (over 90 million people!) is not even on the national grid. Over 76% of rural communities in Nigeria have virtually no access to electricity. While a very select few may own a generator, they are expensive to maintain, and create both noise and air pollution.
Decapolis Community Development Center is committed to helping these rural communities meet their electricity needs and mitigate the effects of climate change by offering them renewable energy options, such as solar energy.
Our first initiative aims to benefit an area comprising 29 communities, with an average of 200- 250 households per community, in an impoverished district in Kogi State, Nigeria. Providing solar flood lights throughout the area for consistent light at night will improve quality of life and increase community and intra-community security.
Once the communities see the benefits and are interested in having more such lights, at their initiative, we will provide the lights and train them in the upkeep and maintenance of the panels and batteries. By giving them ownership, we empower them to invest in the improvement of their own community. And what better illustration of the Gospel is there than shining light into the darkness?
“Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may…glorify your Father in heaven.” ~Matthew 5:15-16
